.) Comfort – A soft blanket is key but saving your legs from the bugs isn’t the only thing you should focus on. Throw pillows or extra blankets can make an afternoon nap possible or mean your back can withstand a few extra chapters of your favorite book. Pro tip: make sure that your blanket is big enough to fit all your guests comfortably.
.) Food and drinks – For me, a good picnic isn’t complete without good cheese. Something smelly, something sweet, paired with fruit and crackers, it is the ultimate easy snack. The one thing I always get: a good aged white cheddar to pair with sliced apple. After that, I just sniff around the cheese section and pick out things I haven’t tried before. Small finger sandwiches or salads are also great. Don’t forget the prosciutto and salami either! Pair it with some wine, Topo Chico, champagne, or whatever your heart desires. Pro tip: insulated thermoses are perfect for storing secret rosé or other adult beverages.
.) Utensils – This is the boring but very important part! Don’t forget silverware for sharing food, a bottle opener for any wine or drinks you may have, and hard surfaces to place food on or just to keep your drinks steady in the grass. If you picnic a lot it might be beneficial to invest in a picnic backpack that contains all the things you need. Napkins are also very helpful but you can always wipe your hands on the blanket in a pinch.
.) Location – A cool spot by the river, a quiet spot in the shade at the park or on the grass for an outdoor movie, a location can really make or break a great picnic. Remember to pack based on how far you are walking. You don’t want to be lugging coolers on a hike. Take recent weather into consideration: if it has rained the last few days, somewhere with harder surfaces would be more ideal. And, if you are heading near water, don’t forget the bug spray!
.) Good company – Sometimes good company just means a good book and sometimes it means all your closest friends to share food with and laugh. Picnics can be a romantic date with your partner or a hearty get together with large groups of friends, it’s really up to you. Don’t forget to bring things to do: outdoor games, board games or just a wireless speaker to play music.
